These are not your normal every day type of hotels. Oh no, these go underwater, are made of ice, built in trees… And so on.
1. Ice hotel
Okay, this is truly one of the coolest (quite literally) hotels I have ever seen!
“You sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on a special bed of snow and ice, on reindeer skins,” “The Icehotel features artwork that is sculpted from massive blocks of ice, harvested from the Torne River towards the end of each winter. These blocks are stored in a giant refrigerated warehouse during the off-season, so as to be immediately available when construction work on the next hotel begins.”
2. Tube hotel
Its location is in Ottensheim, Austria. These tubes are part of the ‘das parkhotel’ comlpex. They’re one of the weirdest hotel rooms on the planet. Basically just gigantic concrete cylinders with a hole for air & light and a front door, one of the other ‘features’ is under-bed storage. The interior is pretty damn cool, but I wouldn’t want to be sleeping in there on very hot day. Oh, also, what happens when it rains? wouldn’t the inside get soaked?
3. Canopy tower
Built in 1965 by the United States Air Force to house radar used in the defense of the Panama Canal, the tower was demilitarized and transferred to Panamá in 1996. Located on top of Semaphore Hill. Dominating the roof is the 30 foot high dome with an observation deck surrounding it from which you can see the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal and the skyline of Panama City.
4. Tree house hotel
At the resort, 40 tree houses are available. Kadirs now has two bars, serving guests from lunch until the last guest leaves, and a 150 seat seafood restaurant and snack bar. Guest services at Kadir’s include laundry, international phone, fax and internet access, satellite television, volley ball, and Ping-Pong tables.
Pretty damn cool. But guess what happens when you build your entire resort out of wood… Picture # three says it all.
Kadirs burned down in the spring and was rapidly rebuilt for the summer tour season. The construction was slap-dash crooked and full of gaps but hey, they call it tree camping for a reason.
5. Lighthouse hotel
After climbing the 80 or so steps, you uncover a 3 story luxury haven, providing all-round panoramic views from your bedroom. You would be alone up there because the this lighthouse only has one bedroom. This gorgeous hotel is located in Harlingen, Netherlands, and costs 250$ – 300$ (USD) per night.
6. Capsule hotel
Your room is a bright orange survival pod which once saw service on an oil rig platform. Originally built in 1972 they are 4.25 meters in diameter and unaltered apart from the addition of a lock on the outside. Each pod provides cosy protection from the elements for up to three occupants.
7. Under and above water hotel
Called the Utter Inn. An underwater hotel and floating hotel all in one, the Utter Inn was conceived by artist/sculpture Mikael Genberg. This floating island retreat has one underwater room with twin beds and a table. Solar panels on the roof provide electric and heat. There is an inflatable canoe so you can tool around the lake and visit the uninhabited island. Sparse but truly escapist, the Utter Inn rates start at $250 a night.
Two other cool ones, worth a mention:
